The Rice Lake Gifted & Talented Program is focused on meeting student needs within a classroom setting. In the past, the gifted and talented program would “pull students out” of their classroom setting for some instructional purposes. We recognize that each individual teacher is the best possible option for each student to maximize learning and now know that always pulling a student out is not in the best interest in student achievement.
The gifted and talented program focuses on teaming with classroom teachers to provide opportunities within the classroom. For a math example, a teacher may pretest a series of concepts and know that the student has a base understanding of the concepts. Engaging in lessons where the student has demonstrated near mastery, is not in the best interest of the student. Instead, the GT program can team with teachers upon request to develop enrichment projects for deeper understanding and application of the concepts. In turn, the teacher can create the atmosphere of flexible grouping based on student needs from concept to concept, and be in the classroom when any student has a question.
